I was a member of the christian dating site called 7ehimlen, until it changed its name to solidlove, my time on that site is an interesting story in its own, but thats not what i wanted to talk about.

What i want with this post, is to ask, why are dating sites different from other community sites? Why do people accept that dating sites costs money?

Most sites today are free, even bigger, more complex and demanding sites are free. Why cant a simple dating site with a few hundred concurrent users be kept free? I think the main problem is the owners, who have little or no experience with web-development, and hence they need to hire other developers, or draw on other "experts"..

The problem with that is a combination of things. One main problem in such situations, is that all the so called "experts", likely have a interest on their own, (a solution to sell, regardless if its ideal or not). At the same time they may be limited by budget, or they may not want to work outside their comfortable areas of development.

But anyway, in the end, they decided to remove the mail function for non-paying members. At which point i just requested my profile to be deleted.
