Vista the Hate and the Love

The: 05/07/2009 - AT: 7:10

I'm really beginning to hate the day i installed Windows Vista Business, i hate running a 32bit OS, when my system is 64bit. If it wasn't for the recent problems I've had with Windows Mail and IE8, then i would be happy about it.

Everything worked fine for about a month or so, that was until my browser Cache in IE8 started acting up. The problems goes away by clearing browser cache and cookies, so i guess you can say that IE8 gets "filled up" at some point.

The Problem with IE8

Of cause it shouldn't really be possible to fill up your browsers cache, but it is in IE8. That's where all sorts of things start to happen, unless you clear your cache in time. I like all sites to remember my logged in state in a cookie, in that its safer then having the browser save the password somewhere on the disk, and in that it makes it easier for me to quickly use all the websites that I'm using.

I already reported the problem in an existing thread at microsoft: Web site settings constantly being lost: Cookie problem?. The problem basically makes IE8 "forget" the cookies, either that, or it ain't sending them at all, for whatever reason.

IE forgets the password for facebook, google, as well as various of forums that I'm visiting. And before you even begin to think about it, NO! this is not a problem with the websites, I've tested it, and ruled it out.

The Problem with Windows Mail

I've yet to report this one, i was actually already aware of the problem with IE8, since I've tried it before and had the same problem. But the issue with windows mail forgetting login details, is the last straw for me. I'm done with IE8 and Windows mail for good, i won't even bother trying to find a solution, because something like this, should just not happen, ever!

Windows mail forgets both my username and my password, for all my installed e-mail accounts. This is not because i clicked the apply button, or whatever. Basically i enter the information once, and rarely touch it afterwards.

Update (13:52)

Later today i had the idea to disable UAC in windows, something which i should have done a long time ago. UAC is obsolete, i recommend everyone to disable it, as its only function is to slow down your computer, even to a complete halt in serious cases.

The problem with Windows Mail was solved by turning off UAC, this can easily be done by opening up the control panel, and searching for UAC. You then get the option to turn it off, which sadly requires you to restart your computer for some reason, but its well worth it.

I also had another problem with IE8, where i was prompted that some application had tried to change my default search engine, which however wasn't the case. But turning off UAC seems to have solved this as well.

I also deleted my browser cache, to solve the cookie problem with IE8. And I'm currently installing vista service pack 2, to see if it solves it. I will post the result at the end of the weak.
