Lots of web hosting companies likes to include awards on their sites, and to use similar deceiving tactics. Just to get more customers.

I wouldn't mind if those where genuine awards, but the truth is that their competitor might as well provide the same services. So whenever you see a web host bragging with so called "Best Host Awards", stay far away.

Awards are the perfect example of some of the useless junk that we don't need.

Professionalism

Instead, you should look for webhost showing actual professionalism and competence in their field.

Read some webhosting review sites, and stay focused at finding the best host to suit your websites needs. A shared host for around 9$/month, will be enough for most.

Minimum requirements

You should at least be able to upload your own files through ftp, have closer look at the Web Designers Tools List, for a list of FTP Clients.

This would allow you to upload a robots.txt, and code your pages offline, as well as edit the HTML as needed. It would also be preferred that you have access to mod_rewrite, and htaccess files. Not as important as the ability to upload files however. Support for a server-sided scripting language, such as PHP, would also be very important.
